Maya Angelou with her mother, "Lady"

Maya Angelou with her mother, “Lady”

I’ve just finished reading one of the most Glorious reads (not just a Good Read), Maya Angelou’s Mom & Me & Mom. I could quote the whole book, but will start here, at an intersection of Angelou’s words and my Sri Vidya and ParaYoga tradition:

I came to the realization..I had a mother. My mother spoke highly of me, and to me. But more important…, she was there with me. She had my back, supported me. This is the role of the mother, and in [her] visit I really saw clearly, and for the first time, why a mother is really important. Not just because she feeds and also loves and cuddles and even mollycoddles a child, but because in an interesting and maybe an eerie and unworldly way, she stands in the gap. She stands between the unknown and the known.

“She stands in the gap.” And there, we lie in Her lap.

Jai, Ma!

There are two things in life that light me up immediately. One is donuts. The other is supporting people in living their best life.
Today I got to enjoy both at the same time and it was deeeeeelicious!
An editor on my team came to me a few months ago and shared that she thought she had a calling to enter a convent.

Turbulence

Out of nowhere, the heart hurts.  A tiny event can trigger a well of emotion that’s been cleverly hidden.

I’ve often heard it said, and I do believe, that when done with proper alignment, yoga postures don’t create sensation inside your body.  They illuminate what’s already there inside.  A camel pose, a deep backbend and stretching of the front side of your body, makes you want to cry, or scream, or puke because of what you’ve held on lockdown inside your chest.
